GUEST CHOREOGRAPHERS SPICE-UP SOUTHERN
CALIFORNIA YOUTH BALLET'S SPRING PERFORMANCE:
SCYB's Spring Production, A Feast of
Dance, features choreography from as far away as China
Southern California Youth Ballet
presents its eclectic A Feast of Dance on Saturday, April 17 at 7 p.m.
and Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m. at the Poway Center for the Performing
Arts, 15498 Espola Road, Poway, California 92064. Performed exclusively
by Southern California Youth Ballet,
the program includes the original choreography of three distinguished
choreographers.
Qi Zhang, educated in China and California, is an award-winning dancer,
artistic director and choreographer from Beijing, China, who won the
coveted Chinese title Outstanding Artist and is also an artistic
consultant and honorary professor.
Gregory Dawson, resident choreographer for the Bachelor of Fine Arts and
Professional Programs of LINES Ballet in San Francisco and founder of
Dawson Dance, has studied and performed with Dance Theatre of Harlem,
Theatre Ballet Canadien, and several California ballet companies.
Michael King is one of Black Mountain
Dance Centre's original students, currently a dance
instructor at Alaska Dance Theatre, as well as a business manager,
costume designer and interior designer in Anchorage. He started his
professional career with the Indianapolis Ballet before becoming
principal for Ballet Austin. Mr. King also performed Brazilian Jazz with
Roberto Diaz's Brazarte Dance Company in Miami, Florida, and has
appeared as a guest performer at the international level.
The program includes
- "Peacock," a traditional classical Chinese dance
choreographed by Qi Zhang
- "In the Midst of a Southern Storm," a contemporary ballet
featuring the premier performance of Gregory Dawson's choreography
- "Sous le Soleil" with original choreography by Michael
King
